Best Dehumidifier

Honeywell 30-Pint Smart Dehumidifier

The Honeywell 30-Pint Smart Energy Star Dehumidifier is our best overall pick because it was incredibly easy to set up and pair with the smartphone app, and it was extremely effective in different areas of our home. While this dehumidifier wasn't the largest model we tested, it's still effective at removing humidity in rooms up to 1,000 square feet, which is sufficient for most apartments and larger homes.

We were surprised by how quiet this model was when turned on, which makes it a great model to put in the hallway between bedrooms or even in a common area. It's also surprisingly easy to empty, despite the larger tank size. A splash guard and built-in handle make the process pretty spill-proof.

The corresponding app allows you to adjust your ideal humidity level and check current humidity readings throughout the day. You can control multiple dehumidifiers through the app if you have a few smart models. The app alerts you when the tank is full, and once you replace it, this model remembers the previous settings so you don't have to re-adjust.

From the very first day of testing, we noted that this machine was almost too effective and made our home feel slightly dry. However, we were able to adjust the settings to make sure it kept the air at a comfortable level. We recommend adjusting the settings so it doesn’t over dry your air.

Frigidaire 50-Pint Dehumidifier with Built-In Pump

Having the capability to remotely monitor and manage a dehumidifier is a notable advantage, especially considering these appliances often operate in less frequented areas of a home, such as basements or storage rooms. With Wi-Fi connectivity, the Frigidaire Gallery FGAC5045W1 allows users to oversee and adjust settings conveniently through the Frigidaire app, compatible with both iOS and Android devices. Additionally, integration with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant enables voice control for added convenience.

Setting up the app is a straightforward process, and we found its alerts to be accurate, facilitating easy management of the dehumidifier's operation with a simple touch on the screen. While the FGAC5045W1's 2.1-gallon bucket may require more frequent emptying compared to the Midea Cube, its manageable weight of about 20 pounds when full and effortless slide-out design eliminates the need to lift a heavy compressor unit. Similar to the Cube, this Frigidaire model boasts an Energy Star Most Efficient rating, ensuring energy-efficient operation.

Although owner reviews of Frigidaire dehumidifiers occasionally mention mechanical issues more frequently than those of the Midea Cube, the FGAC5045W1 stands out due to its superior app functionality, making it a compelling choice for those seeking remote monitoring and control capabilities for their dehumidifier.

Midea 50-Pint Cube Dehumidifier

During our testing, the Midea Cube 50-Pint Smart Dehumidifier stood out with its impressive performance and innovative space-saving design. It offers features similar to other models we tested, but its compact size, high moisture removal capacity, and remote monitoring capabilities make it the top choice in our best smart category.

Once you become familiar with the onboard controls, you can enhance your experience by utilizing the corresponding smartphone app and integrating the dehumidifier with smart home hubs like Amazon Alexa and Google Home. The app provides real-time readings of your home's humidity levels and water tank status, allowing you to adjust settings remotely. Ensure you set it up in an area with reliable WiFi connectivity for seamless operation.

We appreciated the unit's user-friendly design, with clear guidance provided in the instruction manual and helpful guide stickers for proper alignment of the water bucket. Emptying the water tank is straightforward, and the option for continuous drainage simplifies maintenance further. However, the included drainage hose may be too short for some users' needs.

Our only concern with this dehumidifier was its tendency to develop mildew growth faster than other models. We recommend regularly cleaning the water tank to address this issue, as the external fan design may contribute to increased air intake. Overall, despite this minor concern, the Midea Cube offers exceptional performance and innovative features for efficient moisture control in any space.

How We Tested

  1. Moisture Removal Capacity: The primary function of a dehumidifier is to remove excess moisture from the air. We assessed each unit's ability to effectively dehumidify various room sizes and humidity levels.

  2. Energy Efficiency: Dehumidifiers can consume significant amounts of energy, especially when running continuously. We evaluated the energy efficiency of each unit to determine its long-term operating costs and environmental impact.

  3. Noise Levels: The noise produced by a dehumidifier can be disruptive, particularly in quiet environments such as bedrooms or offices. We measured the noise levels of each unit during operation and assessed their impact on user comfort.

  4. Portability and Installation: Ease of setup and portability are essential considerations, especially for users who may need to move the dehumidifier between different rooms or locations. We evaluated the size, weight, and installation process of each unit.
